Anyone ever tried a storytelling resume?

I’m transitioning from one communications field to another and seeking advice from successful people in the field. Two have mentioned using a combination functional-chronological resume that mirrors the job posting itself.

Basically, they are saying I should create a resume with social media, strategic communication, media relations and event planning as sections with a line or two beneath explaining my experience. The final parts of my resume should be companies worked for with dates and education.

I’ve encountered interviewers who were put off that they were unfamiliar with the companies that employed me, so I believe a storytelling resume (referring to how the second person described it) would be beneficial. Previous employer name recognition would matter less, so the focus would be on skills and cultural fit.

Please share your thoughts with me. I am in the process of creating a functional-chronological resume based on the job postings and my current standard chronological one.

Thanks!
